Firefighters from the Barlad Detachment of the Vaslui Emergency Management Inspectorate (ISU) intervened Saturday to rescue a horse that had fallen between the tracks on the iron railway bridge on the outskirts of Barlad. According to ISU Vaslui, 'the horse attempted to cross the railway bridge but fell with its legs trapped between the railroad ties, remaining suspended on its abdomen. Emergency responders contacted regional staff from the National Railway Company. Following the intervention of Barlad firefighters, the animal was safely extricated from the tracks.' The horse was handed over to its owner. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Loredana Ciobanu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi) Display count: 471
Lasconi urges Nicusor Dan to acknowledge poor decisions, or risk becoming Romania's first dismissed president
Former USR leader Elena Lasconi urged President Nicu?or Dan on Saturday to take responsibility for his decisions and acknowledge before Romanians that he has made mistakes. 'I have watched in silence, but sometimes silence cries out and causes pain. How hard is it to take responsibility for your own decisions? How hard is it to stand before the people and say: 'I was stupid, I was wrong'? Mr. President, Romanians are forgiving people. What really matters is to be honest, credible, human. I know you lack these qualities, but you are the 'head of the country', with an entire apparatus at your disposal. You can use it to fix mistakes. I know you, unfortunately. If you do not come out now, at the eleventh hour, before Romanians and take responsibility for your decisions, I believe you will become the first dismissed president in Romania's history. Cowardice won't work anymore. You cannot keep pointing fingers elsewhere, you cannot blame others forever. The decisions are yours. Be responsible!,' Lasconi wrote on Facebook. She went on to say that 'at Cotroceni you don't need trigonometry. You need dignity, empathy, diplomacy and the honesty you claim. The honour of working for the people's well-being does not mean traveling from one country to another with the protection detail behind you and disconnecting from the people. Honour is born only from integrity. You cannot fight for something you do not love. You cannot fight for Romania if it does not run through your veins.' 'At least take some acting lessons so you can finish this term without plunging us into permanent crises. Otherwise, God bless you, because trouble is pouring in! I thought of ending with a wish from Ion Creanga's stories because, Mr. President, you are on the verge of becoming a story character. It's up to you whether you want to be the good, or the bad one,' Lasconi concluded. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Irina Poenaru; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi) Display count: 378
President Dan says strategic partnership between Romania and Turkey could be expanded
President Nicusor Dan said on Saturday in Istanbul that at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, the strategic partnership between Romania and Turkey could be expanded to include cooperation on Black Sea undersea infrastructure. 'We have a 15-year strategic partnership and shared interests - first of all in the Black Sea. As you know, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have a joint mine-clearing programme in territorial waters, and at the NATO summit in Ankara - we hope all formalities will be completed by then - we will extend this partnership to include undersea infrastructure in the Black Sea. This is important for us, obviously, because we are interested in exploiting Black Sea gas and other subsea infrastructure, but that is the most important,' Nicusor Dan said at the end of a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the occasion of the ceremony marking the commissioning of the HISAR-class corvette Contraamiral August Roman. Dan said he also discussed with President Erdogan Romania's wish for the NATO Black Sea Centre - currently located in Istanbul - to be moved to Constanta starting in 2028. 'When we discussed the Black Sea, we also discussed the NATO Black Sea Centre, which is currently in Istanbul and which we want to move to Constanta beginning in 2028. It is a rotational NATO centre for the Black Sea,' the Romanian president said. Another topic raised, according to Dan, concerned the planned European civil-security centre or hub for the Black Sea region. The president said the centre's main task would be to gather information on navigation and developments in the Black Sea, with a secondary role of linking the European Union to countries with interests in the region - Turkey among them. Dan also noted that the two leaders discussed opportunities for cooperation in the defence industry. He pointed out that a Turkish private company had recently purchased a Romanian company in Medias, adding: 'This is part of our interest in attracting investment into our defence industry, which has not had the most efficient management in the years after the Revolution, but still has interesting opportunities - both in terms of people and locations.' President Nicusor Dan attended in Istanbul, together with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the ceremony marking the commissioning of the HISAR-class corvette Contraamiral August Roman. FITS2026/Cristian Macelaru: Romania is the world's most beautiful country, my love deepens with every homecoming
Artistic director of the Enescu Festival and Competition, conductor Cristian Macelaru, confessed on Saturday at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS) that he sees Romania as 'the most beautiful country in the world' and that his love for it grows even stronger each time he returns home. 'I'll tell you honestly, from a distance, Romania is the most beautiful country in the world. From a distance. But when I return, when I come home to Romania, I love it even more. Because there is a nostalgia, a beauty you notice from afar. It's exactly that kind of relationship you only appreciate when closeness is no longer there,' Cristian Macelaru remarked during a conference moderated by theater critic Octavian Saiu. Macelaru spoke about the special relationship he has with music and the way it guides him during performances. 'I make music out of passion, and when I know we must go there and the music demands it, I don't look back. (...) And the orchestra feels this as if I'm taking them with me, because you need that wave, that genuine hurricane that sweeps you along,' the conductor explained. According to him, vulnerability, sincerity and authenticity are essential for an artist, because the message delivered to the audience must reach 'from heart to heart'. 'As an artist you must become vulnerable, so that people can see exactly what is inside you, because it is a profound message, a direct message that must pass from heart to heart,' Macelaru said. The conductor revealed that during every concert he lives a deep spiritual experience in which he feels close to loved ones who are no longer alive - his father and his mentors. 'In every concert I conduct, there is a moment when I enter a spiritual world, where I feel close to and one with all those who are no longer with me in life, but who are so real and so profound with me that ... I don't know, it's a completely different world. And for me, music is the way I enter that world. Maybe that's why I conduct much more than I should. (...) And I see the act of creating music as an infinite column of energy, to which each of us adds exactly what is needed for that column to live and grow ceaselessly. And entering that spiritual world connects me to that infinite column, which gives me energy but also creates perhaps the deepest freedom that can ever exist,' he explained. Cristian Macelaru considers that conducting is more a philosophy of human connection than a mere technique. 'Conducting has less to do with technique and more to do with a philosophy and an understanding, a knowledge of what you must do in a relationship with people. (...) If you take a step forward and say 'I love these people', something happens. (...) The transformation is not in others, it is in you, because giving love first of all means beginning to love yourself - and that is the deepest thing in a relationship with people,' Macelaru said. During the FITS dialogue, he also spoke about his beginnings in music. The tenth child in his family, Cristian first played the piano, then his father encouraged him to study the violin because he needed a violinist in the amateur orchestra he conducted. As a teenager, Macelaru began conducting and fell in love with it after arriving in the United States. The special conference with Cristian Macelaru was attended by dozens of university professors from 40 countries who came to Sibiu to take part in the doctoral platform organised within FITS. On Friday evening, the opening night of FITS, Macelaru conducted the Janoska Ensemble and the Romanian Youth Orchestra on the stage in Sibiu city's Grand Square, where thousands of people were present. 'I feel honoured to be at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival for the second time. (...) What happens every day, at every event of this festival - as it happens at the Enescu Festival - endures forever. And I am so glad to be part of this festival, which promotes what is most beautiful in the world. Because together we can create a beautiful world, despite existing problems. I believe we have the possibility, every day, to create something more beautiful than ourselves. Not so much for us today, but for a world that will come after us, perhaps even a new world,' Cristian Macelaru declared before the concert, at the festival's opening ceremony. According to festival president Constantin Chiriac, FITS brings together, until June 29, more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries and will offer the public 848 events, eight more than at the previous edition. President Dan: Corvette Contraamiral August Roman will reinforce Romania's contribution to regional security
President Nicusor Dan said on Saturday in Istanbul, where he joined Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the flag-granting ceremony for the HISAR-class corvette Contraamiral August Roman, that the ship will strengthen Romania's contribution to regional security and to the country's commitments within the North Atlantic Alliance. 'The commissioning of the corvette Contraamiral August Roman marks an important moment in the evolution and modernization of the Romanian naval forces. This vessel will reinforce Romania's contribution to regional security and to fulfilling the commitments Romania has undertaken within the North Atlantic Alliance. Mr. President, the partnership between Turkey and Romania is a solid one. We are living through tense moments internationally, when security becomes extremely important. And I want to thank you for our solid security partnership - and I would mention here the joint operations carried out together with Turkey and Bulgaria in the Black Sea as regards mine countermeasures. I thank you for Turkey's participation in the air-policing mission in Romania, and for our close cooperation within the North Atlantic Alliance,' President Dan said during the ceremony held at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard. The head of the state added that the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara will be 'an important moment' for the Alliance. 'We all want this, and I wish you success in organizing the NATO Summit in Ankara. It will be an important moment for the Alliance. We must move forward with the commitments we all made in The Hague, and it is not only about the financial component - it is about turning that additional funding into equipment. And here I believe the relationship and the contacts we already have in the defence-industry field are important. There are significant opportunities for joint military production between Turkey and Romania, and I hope that our future interaction and your expected visit to Romania will help materialize these opportunities,' the Romanian president underscored. The event took place in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and delegations of officials from both countries. Experts' forum conclusion: 'Blue economy' can turn Danube Delta into European aquatic-resilience hub
Experts from the Danube Delta National Research and Development Institute (INCDDD), the Tulcea County Council, and the local private sector say they are committed to turning the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve into 'the heart of Europe's aquatic resilience' through 'blue innovation', collaboration and projects - despite the difficulties encountered over time in working with various authorities. The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of marine and aquatic resources for economic growth, job creation and improved livelihoods, while protecting ecosystem health. The concept is supported through several EU funding programmes. INCDDD's scientific director Iulian Nichersu told AGERPRES at the end of the Blue Economy Experts' Forum, hosted this week in Tulcea, that the event reminded participants that modern governance means transnational cooperation and the exchange of best practices. 'Europe challenges us through the EU Mission Ocean initiative to be bold, to restore waters and protect biodiversity through innovation. Our response is firm - we officially commit to transforming the Danube Delta and the city of Tulcea into a regional hub for implementing the blue economy in the Black Sea. The hub is already functioning through a strategic partnership. (...) Through close cooperation between the County Council, INCDDD and the Delta complex, as well as other public authorities such as the Delta Administration, we show that Tulcea has the full formula: political vision, scientific rigour and an economic driver. Protecting the Delta does not mean isolating it from the world or blocking development; it means reinventing it through blue innovation. The County Council, INCDDD and the private sector assume the role of turning the Delta and Tulcea into the heart of Europe's aquatic resilience,' Nichersu said. Although the Danube Delta Management Plan, the strategic document for the reserve, has not yet been adopted, Nichersu expressed confidence that the said document and other strategies for the area can become engines of transformation. 'The purpose of this forum was to outline the future. We analysed the stage of blue-economy implementation possibilities, and how planning tools - such as the Management Plan and the Delta Transport Strategy - can become drivers of transformation for the entire region. The key word is future, and that future is inseparable from a sustainable and innovative blue economy,' Nichersu concluded. Over the years, several Delta-related research projects have faced obstacles or stalled - including a project that could have turned Tulcea Port into a 'green hub', publicly presented in 2021 during a symposium organized by the institute, though initiated earlier. 'Tulcea Port depends on the port of Galati, and we had a challenge from a lady there who said she wasn't interested (in the project). Tulcea, as a county, in terms of resource opportunities, research and implementation, is by far the most important county in Romania, leaving aside the fact that the Danube Delta is clearly the most important UNESCO heritage site in Europe and worldwide,' said Delia Dimitriu, board member of the Danube Delta Decarbonisation Association and expert with the European Commission. The Danubius project - declared in 2013 a flagship of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region and intended to provide 18 types of customised services, including for Romania - has also had a difficult path. 'The first major hurdle has been passed, in the sense that construction has begun on the laboratories and the hub. The first big step was taken in 2024 when the construction contract was signed, and excavations for the foundation are already underway. (...) For the Romanian side, only 20% of services are functional, the rest are about to become functional because they depend on the laboratories now under construction,' said Simona Litescu, representative of the National Institute for Research and Development in Biological Sciences (INCDSB) in Bucharest. She added that all other European supersites in the Danubius project already offer their full range of services, and that the Romanian supersite collaborates with them. She noted that Delta residents themselves will benefit from the data collected by researchers. 'We have technologies based on biomass recovery, for example. Certainly, in a Delta household there are plant residues. The resident can put them to good use and, instead of causing environmental pollution, provided that there is a viable solution in place, they can convert the biomass - the waste in their backyard - and obtain an extract for, say, the chicken they keep, because it makes it feel better, or it can be used by humans to make them feel better. It all depends on what we find there, in the household's yard,' Litescu said. During her presentation at the forum, she expressed confidence that the Danube Delta supersite within the Danubius project will be operational in 2028. Tulcea hosted over June 16 - 18 the forum 'Challenges and Opportunities in the Danube Delta: Developing the Blue Economy', organized by the County Council, INCDDD and the Delta hotel complex. The event aimed to intensify interconnected actions in the context of pressures from climate change, pollution and the need for regional development, and brought together researchers and university professors from Romania and abroad, as well as representatives of the European Commission. The Danube Delta Management Plan is a strategic document for protecting nature and ensuring the sustainable development of communities within the reserve. FITS 2026/ Cristian Mungiu, Oscar-winning film among highlights of American Independent Film Festival
The American Independent Film Festival (AIFF) returns to Sibiu for the second consecutive year between June 22 and 27, in partnership with the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), bringing audiences a selection of exclusive screenings and a meeting with director Cristian Mungiu. All screenings will take place at CineGold in Promenada Mall. The festival opens on June 22 with 'Two People Exchanging Saliva', directed by Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata, winner of the 2026 Academy Award for Best Short Film. Set in a dystopian Paris where kissing is forbidden and slaps have become a form of currency, the film offers an unconventional story about human relationships. AIFF will pay tribute to French actress Fanny Ardant, a guest of FITS 2026, with screenings on June 23 and 24 of Francois Truffaut's 'La Femme d'a Côté' (1981) and Nicolas Bedos' 'La Belle époque' (2019). Director Cristian Mungiu will engage in a dialogue with theatre critic Octavian Saiu on June 25 at the Hall of Mirrors of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. The same day, CineGold will screen 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' (2025), directed by Kaouther Ben Hania and inspired by the true story of a six-year-old girl trapped inside a car in Gaza under continuous fire. The programme continues on June 26 with 'The New Gospel' (2020), a docudrama by Milo Rau reinterpreting the life and message of Jesus in the context of the 21st century. The festival's closing day is dedicated to the 'Artists in Conflict Zones' section and features the Oscar-winning documentary '20 Days in Mariupol' (2023) by Ukrainian journalist and filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov, depicting the first weeks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Now in its 11th edition, the American Independent Film Festival is organised by the Cinemascop Association in partnership with FITS. Over the years, the festival has brought to Romania award-winning films from Sundance, Tribeca, Telluride and Cannes, while its guests have included personalities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, Sebastian Stan, Barry Jenkins, Steven Spielberg, Natalie Musteata and Alexandre Singh. FITS, running from June 20 to 29, will bring together more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries and feature 848 events, eight more than at the previous edition, according to festival president and actor Constantin Chiriac.
