The American Independent Film Festival (AIFF) returns to Sibiu for the second consecutive year between June 22 and 27, in partnership with the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), bringing audiences a selection of exclusive screenings and a meeting with director Cristian Mungiu.
All screenings will take place at CineGold in Promenada Mall. The festival opens on June 22 with 'Two People Exchanging Saliva', directed by Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata, winner of the 2026 Academy Award for Best Short Film. Set in a dystopian Paris where kissing is forbidden and slaps have become a form of currency, the film offers an unconventional story about human relationships.
AIFF will pay tribute to French actress Fanny Ardant, a guest of FITS 2026, with screenings on June 23 and 24 of Francois Truffaut's 'La Femme d'a Côté' (1981) and Nicolas Bedos' 'La Belle Époque' (2019).
Director Cristian Mungiu will engage in a dialogue with theatre critic Octavian Saiu on June 25 at the Hall of Mirrors of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. The same day, CineGold will screen 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' (2025), directed by Kaouther Ben Hania and inspired by the true story of a six-year-old girl trapped inside a car in Gaza under continuous fire.
The programme continues on June 26 with 'The New Gospel' (2020), a docudrama by Milo Rau reinterpreting the life and message of Jesus in the context of the 21st century. The festival's closing day is dedicated to the 'Artists in Conflict Zones' section and features the Oscar-winning documentary '20 Days in Mariupol' (2023) by Ukrainian journalist and filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov, depicting the first weeks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Now in its 11th edition, the American Independent Film Festival is organised by the Cinemascop Association in partnership with FITS. Over the years, the festival has brought to Romania award-winning films from Sundance, Tribeca, Telluride and Cannes, while its guests have included personalities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, Sebastian Stan, Barry Jenkins, Steven Spielberg, Natalie Musteata and Alexandre Singh.
FITS, running from June 20 to 29, will bring together more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries and feature 848 events, eight more than at the previous edition, according to festival president and actor Constantin Chiriac. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Isabela Paulescu; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
