The National Liberal Party's Extraordinary National Council voted on Friday for the party to hold an Extraordinary Congress on Sunday as of noon, at the Romexpo Exhibition Center.
The decision passed with 566 votes in favour, 97 against and 18 abstentions, PNL deputy Ionel Bogdan announced. 'Over 80% of delegates voted to convene the Extraordinary Congress,' he said.
The Council also approved amendments to the party Statute, that include creating a National Standing Bureau (BPN) as the central leadership body, eliminating the Executive Bureau (BEx) and integrating its powers into the BPN, returning to leadership elections based on motions, and reducing the number of First Deputy Chairs from four to one.
Other changes include establishing a National Disputes Commission to rule on internal disciplinary cases and clarifying sanctioning procedures.
The Council set the representation rule for the June 21 Extraordinary Congress at 2,500 delegates and opened the window for submitting motions, with a Saturday 17:00 deadline.
Prime Minister-designate Adrian Vestea, who has announced his intention to run for party leader, had asked for the Congress to be postponed to next week.
Meanwhile, 16 MPs aligned with Vestea filed a new case at the Ilfov Tribunal seeking the suspension of the BPN decisions of June 17 that convened both the Council and the Congress. The court set July 3 as the hearing date.
