Around 100 outdoor events are scheduled for this year's Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), with one of Friday evening's highlights set to be the Italian aerial dance performance 'Journey Through the Cosmos', in which a performer will rise ten metres above Sibiu's historic Grand Square, suspended from a helium-filled balloon.
'Journey Through the Cosmos' focuses on the visual impact of aerial performances by a dancer suspended beneath a seven-metre-diameter 'Heliosphere', while also emphasising the direct interaction with audiences characteristic of street theatre. Audience engagement is enhanced by stilt walkers and ground-level dancers who move the 'Heliosphere' through the crowd, transforming the space into a living experience, according to information published on the festival's website.
The first street performance of this year's FITS has already taken place on Nicolae Balcescu pedestrian street, featuring two Catalan performers appearing in Sibiu for the first time.
Among the new additions to the outdoor programme is the street show 'In Search of Maki', presented by the StreetFools company from Spain and Italy. Directed by Rudolf Hebinger, the production follows the adventures of two ninja warriors who arrive in the city to recover the sacred fish Maki, stolen from their monastery.
'The advantage of these street-theatre performers at FITS is that they interact with the public in a humorous and spectacular way,' Dan Bartha, coordinator of the outdoor events, said.
Outdoor performances are taking place in Grand Square, Small Square, Huet Square, Nicolae Belcescu pedestrian street and the Habermann area. Organisers encourage spectators to consult the programme displayed throughout the city centre and on the festival website.
'We have put a great deal of passion into this edition and into creating the programme. There is tremendous variety. Sometimes spectators may find themselves encountering a performance right in front of them,' Bartha added.
Running from Friday until June 29, FITS will bring together more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries and feature 848 events, eight more than at last year's edition, according to festival president Constantin Chiriac.
