Two international experts are taking part in the mission to revalidate the UNESCO status of the Hateg Country Global Geopark, assessing its progress over the past four years. On Tuesday, representatives of the geopark, the leadership of the University of Bucharest - which administers the site - and local and county authorities met at Nopcsa Castle in Sacel to present recent projects and outline future plans. University of Bucharest Rector Marian Preda said the geopark's activity is highly regarded both internationally and within the university. 'I believe the geopark's activity is extremely well regarded, both internationally and from our perspective at the University of Bucharest, given the role we assumed - as a local catalyst and promoter of community development in Hateg Country and Hunedoara County. Everyone has seen that the university has been the right catalyst to build bridges between communities and help people and institutions make use of this enormous potential,' Marian Preda said. He highlighted Hunedoara County's exceptional natural and historical assets and the university's long-standing involvement in research and community development. Preda stressed the importance of education and said the university will expand its projects in the region. A new space has been acquired next to the geopark's Hateg headquarters, allowing for a larger museum building, a research laboratory and accommodation for students doing summer fieldwork. Geopark coordinator Cristian Ciobanu said the institution has become deeply rooted in the local community over more than two decades. 'The geopark is already part of community life in many ways. We would have liked to calculate an economic and social impact - it's almost impossible, but it can be felt and seen. The fact that the dinosaur fossil heritage has entered the pantheon of Hateg Country values is one indicator. The growth in tourism quality and numbers is another. I believe we are one of the mature geoparks, among the best in Europe, but we certainly still have things to learn. (...) We genuinely want constructive criticism and examples from elsewhere so we can do even better,' Ciobanu said. The two evaluators praised the landscape and the community's involvement. Spanish expert Ivan Cortijo Sanchez said: 'We are here to share experiences, to learn from one another, and to see the work done by the geopark's representatives in developing sustainable strategies. I noticed the reconstruction of the castle and the way activities are carried out for the people, not just for visitors. I also noticed the educational projects through which scientific knowledge is passed on to local communities.' Vietnamese evaluator, Professor Tran Tan Van added: 'The landscape here is very beautiful. It is a wonderful geopark. The local people are enthusiastic. There are excellent geological sites that we will see in the coming days. It is a senior, successful geopark, and I believe it can be a good example for other geoparks in Romania.' By the end of the week, the experts will review achievements in geological, natural and cultural heritage conservation, education, and sustainable tourism, as well as future plans. The geopark's representatives intend to propose expanding the territory to include Banita commune, which would bring the entire Hateg Country under the geopark's umbrella. Leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Tuesday, after consultations with President Nicusor Dan, that three governing options remain on the table - two minority formulas and a third involving a 'very slim' majority. He said UDMR presented three variants, noting that reviving the former government coalition was no longer realistic. The first option is a PNL-USR-UDMR minority government, transparently supported by PSD, though PSD Chairman Sorin Grindeanu has already ruled this out. The second is a PSD single-party minority government, backed in Parliament by PNL, UDMR and the minorities group - including the PNL MPs who supported the Vestea Cabinet, because 'otherwise the numbers don't add up'. A third option would be a government with a very narrow majority, essentially restoring the coalition that functioned until June 2025 - made up of PSD, PNL, UDMR and the minorities group - which, he argued, would offer greater stability and allow the government to implement its agenda, including the 2027 budget. Kelemen emphasized that any of these options must begin with a political agreement among parliamentary parties before nominating a prime minister. He warned that naming a candidate first alters the negotiation dynamics: the parties must reach an understanding before discussing parliamentary support. With a political agreement in place, he said, the procedure could be completed quickly, 'by early next week, before the end of June'. UDMR is now awaiting the president's decision on whether he will make a nomination immediately or allow more time for parties to reach an understanding, Kelemen Hunor said. Romanian Naval Authority announces implementation of 4 million euros project to improve navigation safety on the Danube
The Romanian Naval Authority (ANR), in partnership with Bulgaria's Executive Agency 'Maritime Administration' (EAMA), has announced the launch of a project worth nearly 4 million euros aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of navigation on the Romanian-Bulgarian section of the Danube. According to ANR representatives, the need for the project stems from the challenges facing river transport on the Danube, including fragmented data systems, differences in the efficiency of inspection processes, and growing risks associated with climate change and environmental pollution. 'In the context of increasing freight traffic and the strategic importance of the Danube as Europe's main inland waterway transport corridor, there is a need to develop modern and integrated mechanisms for monitoring, control and intervention,' ANR said in a press release on Tuesday. Under the project, a joint platform for data exchange and management between Romania and Bulgaria will be developed and implemented, alongside artificial intelligence-based tools for risk assessment and prediction, integrated inspection workflows, and mobile units equipped with modern technologies for carrying out field inspections. 'The systems developed will enable the proactive identification of high-risk vessels, improve decision-making processes and reduce response times in the event of navigation incidents and emergencies,' ANR stated. The project will be implemented through three main work packages: operational analysis and the definition of technical requirements; the development of integrated inspection workflows and data management systems; and the continuous monitoring and optimisation of system performance. A key innovation is the creation of a shared digital framework for cross-border cooperation, which will facilitate real-time information exchange, coordinated interventions and the consistent application of navigation safety rules along the common Romanian-Bulgarian section of the Danube. 'The direct beneficiaries of the project are the maritime authorities of Romania and Bulgaria, transport operators and port operators. However, the positive effects of the project will extend across the entire Danube region. Riverside communities will benefit from enhanced navigation safety, reduced pollution risks, improved environmental quality and the development of a more efficient and resilient waterborne transport system capable of supporting long-term economic development and the protection of natural resources,' the press release added. The project, ROBG00432 - DANRISS 2 (Smart Technologies for Navigation Safety and Environmental Protection on the Danube), is financed through the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria Programme and it will be implemented over a period of 25 months. 'DANRISS 2 is a strategic cross-border cooperation initiative aimed at modernising vessel inspection activities on the common Romanian-Bulgarian section of the Danube through the use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis and integration systems. The project contributes to the development of safer, more efficient and more sustainable navigation, in line with the objectives of the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region and the European Green Deal,' ANR also stated. CCIR signs new MoU with Shanghai International Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) and the Shanghai International Chamber of Commerce (CCPIT) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding on Monday, renewing the institutional partnership between the two organisations exactly three decades after their first cooperation agreement, signed in June 1996. According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, the new memorandum aims to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, organise international exhibitions and facilitate commercial arbitration, while identifying new opportunities for collaboration between Romanian companies and businesses from the Shanghai region. 'Romania already has a longstanding economic partnership with China, with bilateral trade amounting to approximately 10.8 billion US dollars, while more than 14,800 companies with Chinese capital are currently registered with Romania's Trade Register. All of these firms are Romanian legal entities with full access to the European Single Market and are the best ambassadors of economic cooperation between our two countries because they understand both Romanian and Chinese legislation,' said CCIR President Mihai Daraban. Organised by Posta Romana National Company (CNPR), through the Posta Romana Foundation, the event marks a first for the postal community and carries special historical significance: the celebration of 100 years since the first airmail and commercial flight on the Bucharest-Galati-Chisinau route, a milestone that opened new paths for communication, connectivity and closer ties between communities on both sides of the Prut River. According to a Romanian Post press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, a joint stamp issue commemorating this historic moment will be launched in Chisinau on 24 June in collaboration with Posta Moldovei. 'With a tradition that began in 1977, the Postal Workers' March is more than a sporting competition. It is a celebration of a profession that has remained, for generations, a symbol of trust, responsibility and direct connection between people. Romania urgently needs a fully empowered government, National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman and acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday. He sent a message after Parliament's rejection of the Vestea Government, arguing that anything built without principles, seriousness and honesty cannot endure. 'Romania urgently needs a fully empowered government. A government built on transparency, clear rules and respect for democratic principles. Backroom dealings and betrayals have shown their limits. According to Bolojan, the National Liberal Party maintains its proposal for the appointment of a minority government based on a national pact that would establish Romania's priorities for the next six months. National Liberal Party (PNL) First Vice-President Dan Motreanu said that support for the appointment of a government can only be negotiated transparently, through new consultations convened by the head of state and through a written agreement based on principles, 'not on improvised negotiations.' 'The government of traitors failed to secure Parliament's vote even after the designated Prime Minister humiliated himself before AUR [the Alliance for Romanians' Union] in a desperate attempt to obtain that party's support. If the parties were to sign such a national pact, there are two options that could be considered: a PSD minority government or a minority government formed by PNL, USR [Save Romania Union] and UDMR [Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania]. Grindeanu says that Nicusor Dan will hold consultations to appoint a new PM fairly soon
PSD chairman Sorin Grindeanu declared on Monday evening, after Parliament's vote to reject the investiture of the Adrian Vestea government, that he expects President Nicusor Dan to call the parties to consultations at Cotroceni Palace in the coming days to designate a new prime minister. 'I want to congratulate Adrian Vestea for accepting to enter this battle, for being a responsible man, a man who wanted the good, a man who wants the good, I don't want to talk about the past. A man who wants Romania to have what I think every man of good faith wants, a stable government that makes public policies for Romanians, so that we don't enter an area of economic slippage. Of course, there are others who at this moment were not even present at the vote, some of them, sitting in office, are playing moralists. But it's not my job to judge them, it's the Romanians' job, it's the Romanians' job to judge each of those who at this moment put their personal positions above the good of Romanians,' Grindeanu told the press, in Parliament.
