Artificial intelligence is a key area for expanding cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Korea, amid the development of bilateral relations in sectors such as defence, nuclear energy and infrastructure, South Korea's ambassador to Bucharest, Seung-chul Hur, said on Wednesday.

'Recently, relations between Korea and Romania have developed considerably, particularly in areas such as the defence industry, nuclear energy and infrastructure. I would like to emphasise that artificial intelligence is a key area of cooperation between the two countries,' the South Korean ambassador said.

He highlighted the importance the South Korean Government attaches to artificial intelligence, including in terms of international cooperation.

'In his main address to the United Nations General Assembly, President Lee Jae-myung presented a vision of a global society in which access to artificial intelligence would be universal. He also announced plans to establish a global artificial intelligence centre, a platform for cooperation between international organisations, multilateral development banks, industry and academia. The Korean Government regards artificial intelligence not only as a new engine of national economic growth, but also as a key area of cooperation with the international community, and wishes to work closely with partner countries, including Romania,' Seung-chul Hur said.

The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest is organising an artificial intelligence workshop at the Palace of Parliament on Wednesday, addressing topics including AI governance, the digitalisation of public administration, the development of digital infrastructure and cybersecurity.

The event is being organised in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Korea, under the high patronage of the Romanian Senate.

According to the invitation sent to AGERPRES, the workshop will bring together senior officials and experts from South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Korea Local Information Research & Development Institute (KLID), the National Information Society Agency (NIA), as well as representatives of ICI Bucharest, KOMSCO and the Korea Customs Service (KCS).
