The population's access to the public water supply network continues to improve, from 77.6% to 78.2%, however regional disparities remain significant, with the highest share of the population connected to the public water supply system recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (98.3%) and the lowest in the North-East (53.3%).

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) release, in 2025, the population connected to the public water supply network amounted to 14.887 million persons, accounting for 78.2% of Romania's resident population, 105,478 persons more than in 2024.

At the level of development regions, the highest share of the resident population connected to the public water supply system was recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (98.3%), followed by the South-East region (89.9%). The lowest connection rate was recorded in the North-East region (53.3%), followed by the South-Muntenia region (71.6%).

The total volume of water distributed last year fell by 14.5% compared with 2024, mainly as a result of reduced volumes distributed to agriculture and the industry and construction sector. The volume distributed to the population increased by 75.969 million cubic metres.

The largest volumes of water distributed were recorded in the Buzau-Ialomita (36.3%) and Arges-Vedea (15.8%) river basins. AGERPRES (RO - editing by: Andreea Marinescu; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
