Tennis: Gabriela Ruse opens Beijing WTA tournament with a win

Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse defeated Austria's Lilli Tagger 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing (China), which offers total prize money of 9,415,725 US dollars.

Ruse (28, world No. 62) secured victory in one hour and 24 minutes in her first-ever meeting with Tagger (18, world No. 61).

The Romanian earned a cheque worth 36,110 US dollars and 35 WTA points, and will face fifth seed Linda Noskova in the second round. Ruse won her only previous meeting with Noskova (21, world No. 6), the Wimbledon champion and recent Billie Jean King Cup winner with the Czech team, in the first round at Bad Homburg on grass in June, 6-1, 6-3.
