The development of an artificial intelligence factory in Bucharest, at the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI), will create new opportunities for research and innovation and will contribute to strengthening Romania's position in the European artificial intelligence ecosystem, senior official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) Clara Staicu said on Wednesday.

'An important example of this approach is the development of the artificial intelligence factory in Bucharest, at the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics, our host today. We are confident that this initiative will strengthen Romania's position in the European artificial intelligence ecosystem. We also expect that it will create new opportunities for research and innovation, stimulate cooperation and contribute to the development of artificial intelligence-based solutions,' Staicu said at a specialist event.

According to her, artificial intelligence is becoming a fundamental component of the European economy and security, and the development of this field involves investments in infrastructure, computing capacity, skills and research.

'We must ensure that Europe has the infrastructure, computing capacity, skills and ecosystems necessary to transform research and innovation into applications and economic value.'

Staicu added that European policies in the field of artificial intelligence must aim both to stimulate competitiveness and innovation, as well as to protect citizens and fundamental rights.

She highlighted the importance of cybersecurity, given that artificial intelligence is integrated into an increasing number of economic activities and public services.
At the same time, Staicu underscored the need to strengthen international cooperation, including through the exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices between governments, the private sector and academia.

Referring to the bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea, she showed that Romania wants artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to become new priority areas of cooperation, in the context of the progress made in projects in the field of nuclear energy and the defence industry.

The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest organised on Wednesday at the Parliament House, a workshop dedicated to artificial intelligence, an event that will address governance of artificial intelligence, digitalisation in the public administration, development of digital infrastructures and cybersecurity.

The event was organised in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Korea, under the high patronage of the Romanian Senate.

The workshop brought together representatives at the management level and experts from the Ministry of Interior and Security of the Republic of Korea, the Korea Research and Development Institute for Local Informatics (KLID), the National Information Society Agency (NIA), as well as representatives of ICI Bucharest, KOMSCO and the Korean Customs Service (KCS).
