After spending several hours at the DIICOT headquarters, Calin Georgescu's wife, Cristela, complained on Tuesday about the 'brutal' and 'inhumane' manner in which police officers stormed into her family's villa in Mogosoaia, claiming that the case involving her husband's arrest amounts to 'political persecution.'
She also accused Nicusor Dan of exerting 'political pressure' on the judges, while expressing her dissatisfaction with the 'humiliating' and 'traumatizing' way her husband was detained and handcuffed by law enforcement officers.
Upon leaving the DIICOT headquarters, amidst cheers from dozens of supporters, Cristela Georgescu stated that she had been summoned by prosecutors as a witness to observe the forensic examination of electronic devices previously seized by investigators. 'I appeared today, having been summoned, as a witness in this case, just as my father did yesterday. A standard electronic search procedure was carried out (...) I want you to know that we are an ordinary family, yet we were subjected to brutal, unacceptable actions; it is important for any of you, ordinary people, to realize that you could find yourselves in the same situation one day, waking up accused of acts you did not commit or being treated as guilty before even standing trial,' she stated.
Furthermore, Cristela Georgescu expressed her dissatisfaction with the way armed police officers barged into her family's home in Mogosoaia, as well as the 'humiliating' manner in which her husband was handcuffed. 'I want you to know about the brutal way they forced their way into our home, bursting in on me, my minor child and my father, and the traumatic, almost inhumane manner in which an innocent child was kept under guard at his bedside by an armed man (who might well be a father himself), while a 90-year-old man was guarded by an armed young man who could have been his grandson. Then there was the humiliating and traumatic way Calin was detained, handcuffed and taken into custody right in the middle of traffic in front of minor children, even though he posed no serious, imminent danger,' she explained.
Calin Georgescu's wife accused President Nicusor Dan of exerting political pressure on the judges, maintaining that the allegations in the case are unfounded. 'Now, I want to reiterate, because it is important for everyone to realize that we live in a state claiming to be democratic and governed by the rule of law, a state we were promised would be honest. Yet, we are witnessing political persecution and a politically motivated case in its purest form. My arguments are as follows: the accusations in the case file are baseless. Secondly, to date, I have not gained access to the case file, nor have I been able to study it in its entirety. Thirdly, confidential information, which by law should not be made public before reaching the judge, has appeared in the press before even reaching the court. This has given rise to manipulative and false interpretations and connections. Beyond the fact that our right to privacy was disregarded and our personal data was exposed everywhere, the presumption of innocence, and I want you to know this, is also being violated. The political pressure exerted by the President of Romania and the so-called opposition, including pressure on the judges, paints a picture of a person portrayed as guilty before even standing trial; this is unacceptable and indirectly pressures the judge. Last but not least, fundamental rights and freedoms, including those guaranteed by the ECHR, have been gravely violated,' added Cristela Georgescu. She stated that she would return to DIICOT in the coming days, as the forensic examination of the digital data had not yet been completed.
Calin Georgescu was placed in pre-trial detention on September 29 in connection with a case in which he is accused of defrauding a businessman of 1.1 million euros.
The investigation into this matter began following a complaint filed by a businessman from Buzau, Razvan Leu, who claims to have suffered a loss of 1.1 million euros.
Razvan Leu was reportedly invited to participate in a precious metals trading venture that required a 6-million-euro line of credit. Georgescu allegedly recommended that Leu contact a trusted associate, Ionel Rusen, who in turn introduced him to an Italian national, Massimiliano Arena, a representative of a Swiss bank. To secure the loan, Leu was asked to pay a one-million-euro guarantee; 100,000 euros of this amount was allegedly intended to fund Georgescu's presidential campaign.
Leu was subsequently persuaded to transfer an additional 100,000 euros, based on the promise that the loan amount could be increased to 15 million euros. The loan did not go through, and the businessman from Buzau requested the return of the total 1.1 million euro deposit but did not receive the money.
