The first edition of the colloquium 'The Nadia Comaneci Year. Sports and Social Transformations in 20th Century Romania ' will be hosted, between September 17-18, by the Radu Rosetti' Onesti Municipal Library, an institution that organises the event together with the Onesti City Hall and in collaboration with the Institute of Sociology of the Romanian Academy.

The director of the Culture Department of the Onesti City Hall, Ionut Tenie, said that the event is part of the series of national and international events dedicated to the Nadia Comaneci Year, highlighting the status of the town of Onesti, Nadia Comaneci's birthplace, as European City of Sport 2026.

'The theme of the edition sports and social transformations in 20th century Romania proposes an interdisciplinary perspective on the role of sports in shaping the social imaginary, collective identities and public representations of Romania. 50 years after the historic moment in Montreal, when Nadia Comaneci get the first perfect 10 in the history of Olympic gymnastics, the colloquiums bring back to attention not only the sports performance, but also the transformation of a champion into a cultural symbol of Romania,' Tenie is quoted as saying in a press statement released on Friday.

This first edition brings together guests from the fields of research, contemporary art and classical music and creates a meeting place between academic expertise and community experience.

The event also involves the local community of Onesti, through the participation of sports representatives, students and teachers from educational establishments, strengthening the link between research, education, culture, heritage and community life.
