The fire on board the Gas Lisbon vessel has decreased in intensity, and the situation is being closely monitored by the relevant authorities, the Romanian Naval Authority informs on Wednesday.

'The fire on board the Gas Lisbon vessel has decreased in intensity, and the evolution of the situation is being closely monitored by the relevant authorities. Given the vessel's position, approximately 14 nautical miles from the shore, there is no risk to the population, tourists or activities carried out along the Romanian coast,' the source said.

During the night of July 20/21, the commercial vessel Gas Lisbon, a Liberian-flagged oil tanker, caught fire following an explosion while sailing approximately 20 nautical miles south-east of the town of Sfantu Gheorghe.

The tanker departed from the port of Alexandria (Egypt) and was heading towards Reni (Ukraine), while transiting Romania's Exclusive Economic Zone. It was carrying more than 3,790 tonnes of propane and had a crew of 17 people on board.
