A travelling photographic art exhibition 'Treasures of Romania - UNESCO World Heritage in Maramures' by photographer Tudorel Ilie, will be hosted by the Victor Gorduza County Museum of Mineralogy in Baia Mare throughout November.

As many as eight wooden churches, some hundreds of years old, from Maramures County are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The project aims to promote the values of the UNESCO World Heritage in Maramures through photographs, and continues the cultural project 'Treasures of Romania', whose exhibitions have been presented in Europe and Asia and to hundreds of thousands of visitors.

'The UNESCO heritage is a commonwealth of humanity, of course, respecting the cultural diversity and the unique elements of each people. The exhibition brings together a selection of 30 works that capture monuments, traditions, customs and representative places for the world heritage in Maramures County. The photographs are presented in an exhibition-event that also emphasises the need for conservation and transmission of heritage to future generations. The communities where UNESCO sites are located have a decisive role in the responsible use of heritage, so as to facilitate the encounter between the past and the future, being a bridge between the past and the future generations,' says photographer Tudorel Ilie, announcing the exhibition in an invitation sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

A special feature of the exhibition is the way of presentation. The photographs dedicated to the UNESCO heritage of Maramures will be displayed in the environment of the collections of the Victor Gorduza County Museum of Mineralogy, along with the mine flowers, creating a dialogue between the cultural and natural heritage.

The event is organised as part of the European Heritage Days 2026 themed 'Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine.'

The topic draws attention to the challenges that can affect heritage, from climate change and technological development to social pressures and armed conflicts.

'The theme 'Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine' is not only a theme for 2026, but must be a permanent concern of all of us. Under this project, the organisers aim to bring to the public's attention the values of cultural, natural and intangible heritage inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and to encourage the involvement of communities in protecting them. The younger generation must be educated in the spirit of respect for the integrity of heritage and the need to preserve it in order to truly be the 'living heritage' we want,' added Ilie.

He lives in Baia Mare and, over the years, has been involved and supported numerous cultural photographic art projects representing Romania in exhibitions in the country and abroad.

The opening is scheduled for September 24, and the exhibition can be visited throughout November.
