The annual inflation rate fell to 6.17% in August, from 8.16% in July, as services rose by 11.28%, non-food goods by 6.36% and food goods by 2.62%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.

'The consumer price index in August 2026 compared with July 2026 was 100.22%. The inflation rate since the beginning of the year (August 2026 compared with December 2025) was 4.6%. The annual inflation rate in August 2026 compared with August 2025 was 6.2%. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the last 12 months (September 2025 - August 2026) compared with the previous 12 months (September 2024 - August 2025) was 9.5%,' the INS release informed.

According to the quoted source, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices in August 2026 compared with July 2026 stood at 100.26%. The annual inflation rate in August 2026 compared with August 2025, calculated on the basis of the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), was 6.3%. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the last 12 months (September 2025 - August 2026) compared with the previous 12 months (September 2024 - August 2025), determined on the basis of the HICP, was 8.6%.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has raised its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 to 6.1%, from 5.5% previously, and expects it to reach 3.4% at the end of 2027, up from the previous forecast of 2.9%, according to data presented in August by BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu.
