A photo exhibition about bats, activities for children, demonstrations with an ultrasonic detector and presentations about bats are among the activities prepared for the 'International Bat Night' event, which will take place on Friday at the Visitor Centre of the Defileul Jiului National Park (the Jiului Gorge National Park).

According to representatives of the Defileul Jiului National Park Administration, the event, which starts at 17:00, will also feature a VR (virtual reality) experience, a stand with informational materials about bats and, towards evening, weather permitting, a walk with an ultrasonic detector to listen to the bats.

Moreover, there will be a screening of the documentary film called 'Wild Transylvania.'

'Did you know that 32 species of bats live in Romania, 17 of which have been identified in the Jiului Gorge National Park? The park's forests provide important habitats for species such as the barbastelle and the lesser horseshoe bat. Bats are not 'mice with wings' and they do not feed on blood. The species found in Romania are insectivorous and play an important role in maintaining the natural balance. Through games, colour, technology and direct observation, we will learn to look at these creatures without fear and understand why they need to be protected,' Director of the Defileul Jiului National Park Administration Marin Serban told AGERPRES on Friday.

The event is part of the project called 'Bats in the gorges: nocturnal tales from protected areas' implemented by the Centre for Bat Research and Conservation in partnership with Romsilva - the Iron Gates Natural Park Administration and Romsilva - the Jiului Gorge National Park Administration.
