The National Defence Ministry said its radar surveillance system detected on Thursday afternoon a group of aerial targets moving near Romania's border with Ukraine, close to Snake Island, with Spanish Air and Space Force F-18s and a Romanian IAR 330 Puma SOCAT helicopter scrambled to monitor the situation.

According to the Ministry, the radar system picked up the group of targets at around 15:00. The National Military Command Center notified the Emergency Management General Inspectorate, which issued a RO-ALERT message for northern Tulcea County at around 15:50.

Two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Force, deployed at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base under the Enhanced Air Policing mission, together with an IAR 330 Puma SOCAT helicopter of the Romanian Air Force, took off to monitor the situation.
