ICDL Romania reminds teachers, headteachers and educational institutions of GhidAIEDU.ro, the practical and free resource launched this year for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into education, amid findings that 40% of Romanian 15-year-old pupils use AI chatbots at least once a week to help them learn, while 57% perform below the benchmark level in solving problems using digital tools.
'GhidAIEDU.ro addresses a need that the PISA 2025 results and the World Bank report make even more visible: there is a difference in competence between using technology and knowing how to use it,' ICDL representatives said in a press release.
The guide provides practical guidance on using AI in teaching, assessment and feedback, scenarios for classroom integration, data protection and privacy, academic integrity and criteria that schools can use when considering the adoption of artificial intelligence-based tools.
'The principle underpinning GhidAIEDU.ro is that integrating AI should be a pedagogical decision, not merely a technological one. Artificial intelligence should be used where it brings real value to learning, keeping the teacher, critical thinking and educational objectives at the heart of the process and adapting the assessment process,' ICDL Romania said.
The new PISA assessment of computational problem-solving, namely the ability to solve problems using digital tools and practices, shows that 57% of Romanian pupils are below Level 3, the benchmark at which pupils begin to demonstrate stronger skills in this area.
'Pupils need to know how to critically evaluate information generated by AI, identify potential errors and limitations, protect their personal data, uphold academic integrity and use technology without giving up their own thinking. The PISA results come just a few days after the publication of the World Bank report 'Artificial Intelligence in Romania's Pre-University Education,' which analyses the readiness of the Romanian education system to integrate artificial intelligence,' ICDL said.
The report shows that artificial intelligence is already being used by pupils and teachers, while Romania is still at an 'emerging' stage in terms of its integration at system level and guidance on ethical and responsible use remains limited.
