Flights at Iasi International Airport were suspended on Tuesday after authorities issued a RO-ALERT warning about possible falling objects from the airspace, airport director Romeo Vatra told AGERPRES.

'There are no cancelled flights. For now all flights are suspended until the situation is clarified,' Vatra said.

Iasi Prefect Constantin Dolachi-Pelin stated that the drone entered Romanian territory from the Republic of Moldova: 'The situation is being monitored by the Emergency Management Inspectorate General (IGSU) together with the Army and the forces prepared for such situations. From what I know, it is a drone that came from the Republic of Moldova and was heading toward the south of Iasi County and the north of Vaslui County.'

The Defence Ministry's radar surveillance system detected an aerial target at 16:47, located 18 km north of Roman.

According to the Ministry, the National Military Command Centre notified the Emergency Management Inspectorate General regarding the need to alert the population in Iasi, Suceava, Neamt and Botosani counties, as well as in northern Vaslui County, with IGSU issuing RO-ALERT messages starting at 16:30.

Two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18s, deployed under Enhanced Air Policing at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, took off at 16:39 to monitor the situation. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniela Malache; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
