Romania wants an ambitious future European Union budget, with substantial amounts for Cohesion and Agriculture, President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday at a joint news conference with European Council President Antonio Costa.

The head of state said the main topic of his talks with the European Council President was the negotiation of the EU's future budget.

'Romania has defined much of its position within the Friends of Cohesion group,' Nicusor Dan said.

He therefore said that Romania is advocating for an 'ambitious' budget.

'We are interested in the competitiveness pillar, we are aiming to reduce the gap between European countries,' the president said, adding that Romania wants 'a certain degree of flexibility' when it comes to bureaucracy.

Furthermore, President Nicusor Dan said that the discussions on the EU's multiannual budget aim to answer the question of 'how we can reach a compromise among the 27 member states on both expenditure and revenue.' AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
