John Skoog's film 'Redoubt' to open Bucharest International Film Festival - BIFF 2026

'Redoubt,' a film by Swedish director John Skoog, will open the 22nd edition of the Bucharest International Film Festival - BIFF 2026.

According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, inspired by a true story and shot in striking black and white, 'Redoubt' explores fear and the need to protect others, loneliness and one man's attempt to literally build a safe place in a world he can no longer control.

'Redoubt' (Varn) was screened in the New Directors section of the San Sebastian International Film Festival and was subsequently selected for the BFI London Film Festival.

'Redoubt caught my attention long before we knew it would open BIFF. I had been following it for several months and really wanted to have it at the festival. When the team at Cay Films contacted us and we started talking about the film, everything came together naturally and we jointly decided that 'Redoubt' should open this year's edition. It is a moving and deeply human film about fear, care and loneliness, but also about how far we can go out of a desire to protect others. For me, it is one of those films that ends on the screen but continues to live on, just a little, in each of us,' says Dana Dimitriu, BIFF director.

The opening gala of BIFF 2026 will take place on 18 September at Apollo111 Cinema.

The evening will begin at 7pm with a welcome cocktail, followed at 8pm by a screening of 'Redoubt' for the festival audience and guests.
