'It is with deep sorrow that I have received the news that His Majesty King Harald of Norway passed away earlier today. Norway's King Harald has died at the age of 89, the royal palace announced on Friday, Reuters reported.
The royal palace flew its flag at half-mast, according to television broadcasts. King Harald was regarded as a reformer, Reuters pointed out.
The royal court announced on Thursday that King Harald's health had deteriorated while he was in hospital and that his condition was 'very serious.'
Against this backdrop, Crown Prince Haakon and King Harald's wife, Queen Sonja, cancelled all their scheduled engagements.
Harald, Europe's oldest head of state, was admitted to hospital on 17 August, and the royal household said he was being treated for a bacterial infection in his blood. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
