Romania's President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday evening in Chisinau that 'there is only a little way to go' before the Republic of Moldova joins the European Union, saying the neighbouring country has 'leaders who know how to take it there' and citizens who support this objective.

'There is only a little way to go before the Republic of Moldova enters where it belongs, the European Union. It has leaders who know how to take it there and it has you, those who support this,' Nicusor Dan said in a speech delivered before the crowd gathered in Chisinau's Great National Assembly Square, ahead of the festive concert dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova.

In this context, the Romanian head of state underscored that, despite oppression and deportations, the people of the Republic of Moldova have preserved their culture, traditions and identity.

The President of Romania also referred to Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was present on stage alongside the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, underscoring the importance of preserving national identity.

'President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people prove that when there is awareness and when people defend their identity, nothing can stand in their way,' President Nicusor Dan concluded. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Malina Negrea; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
