Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown sent letters of condolence on Friday to His Majesty King Haakon VIII and Her Majesty Queen Sonja following the death of King Harald of Norway.

'Her Majesty the Custodian of the Crown learned with great sadness of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. The ties between the Royal Families of Romania and Norway have been close for several generations. Queen Anne's mother, Princess Margareta of Denmark, was related to both of King Harald's parents, King Olav V and Crown Princess Martha. King Michael and Queen Anne were also often alongside King Olav, as well as King Harald and Queen Sonja, throughout the decades of exile and after 1989,' the Royal Family of Romania said on Facebook.

The quoted source mentions that Her Majesty Margareta and Prince Radu were guests of King Harald and Queen Sonja in Oslo during King Michael's visits for NATO in 1997 and 2002, while over the years, the two Royal Families often met on family occasions or at official celebrations in Luxembourg, London, Madrid, Athens and, a few months ago, in Stockholm.

'The Custodian of the Crown and Prince Radu had great affection and respect for King Harald and continually admired his remarkable leadership, the courage with which he faced difficulties, and the love, dignity and loyalty with which he served his Nation, reforming and modernising the monarchy while keeping a deep respect for tradition. The Custodian of the Crown, on behalf of the Royal Family of Romania, extends her condolences to the Norwegian people as they bid farewell to their beloved and respected king, and stands alongside all those who are grieving at this time,' the Royal Family of Romania said in the message posted on Facebook.

King Harald V of Norway died on Friday morning after more than 10 days in hospital.
