Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday that after 1 September, Parliament will move into the timetable for appointing a future prime minister.

Grindeanu stated that the Chamber will 'almost certainly' hold another plenary session this week, to debate a hydrogen-related bill coming from the Senate - a NRRP milestone - as well as the NRRP closure law, which 'has not yet been sent by the government.' He added that once the extraordinary sessions of both chambers conclude, 'after 1 September, with the start of the ordinary session, we will enter that calendar we have been talking about for designating a prime minister. Romania needs a new government, a government with full powers. And I believe that next week, with Parliament resuming, we should enter this calendar.'

Asked at Parliament whether he expects support from UDMR, national minorities or other parties for a minority government - or whether he is considering an independent prime minister - Grindeanu replied: 'I admit I'm even more puzzled seeing this ad-hoc AUR-USR alliance aimed at saving some and losing 770 million. I don't see any other reason for their alliance except losing 770 million euros, since in the end the amendment on transparency and publicity was adopted and it was a joint amendment of everyone in committee. So this closeness between AUR and USR on these issues, and on the education law postponement, as we saw, makes you think carefully about what kind of majority could exist after 1 September.'

He noted that in Monday's plenary session, on two extremely important laws - one on education, the other on integrity - AUR and USR voted against.

'Here the 770 million lost no longer matter? Nothing matters anymore? (...) It's very hard for me to believe there could still be any majority that includes PSD and USR. (...)
