Romanian pupils ranked first among nations at the 10th edition of the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics, held from 24 to 30 July in Kaunas, Lithuania, with 100 students from 25 countries taking part.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the gold medals were won by Andrei Nemtisor, an eighth-grade pupil at the 'Costache Negruzzi' National College in Iasi, who achieved the highest score in the competition, and Traian Danciu, a seventh-grade pupil at the International Computer High School of Bucharest.

Mihai Cosmin Boac, an eighth-grade pupil at the International Computer High School of Bucharest, won a silver medal, while Radu Pipernea, an eighth-grade pupil at the 'Tudor Vianu' National College of Computer Science in Bucharest, won a bronze medal.

Romania's team was coordinated by representatives of the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics (SEPI): teachers Emanuela Cerchez from the 'Emil Racovita' National College in Iasi and Dan Spatarel, SEPI representative.

The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of national teams in international Olympiads by covering participation fees and travel costs, daily allowances for the days of stay, as well as by organising and conducting the stages preceding international Olympiads - the local/county/municipal and national stages of these competitions.
