Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and President of the Republic of India Droupadi Murmu discussed bilateral economic and trade cooperation as the foundation of Romanian-Indian relations during their meeting on Friday at Victoria Palace.
According to a Government press release, deepening bilateral economic cooperation is the main objective of the Indian official's visit to Romania, alongside strengthening people-to-people ties through increased cultural, academic, sporting, research and innovation exchanges.
In this regard, the decision to designate 2028 as the Romania-India Year of Innovation, as well as the signing of documents aimed at intensifying cooperation in these areas, were welcomed by the Romanian Prime Minister at the beginning of his meeting with the Indian official.
'The discussions at Victoria Palace focused on economic and trade cooperation, the foundation of Romanian-Indian bilateral relations. On this occasion, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan welcomed the establishment of the shared objective of doubling bilateral trade volumes in the coming years, particularly by capitalising on the EU-India Free Trade Agreement once it enters into force in 2027. In this context, diversifying economic cooperation represents a priority in key sectors such as renewable energy, information and communications technology, manufacturing, the pharmaceutical industry, and maritime and air connectivity. At the same time, new areas of cooperation will be explored, including the defence industry, fertiliser production, mineral production and exploitation, advanced technologies and artificial intelligence,' the press release said.
The interim Prime Minister stressed that the visit of the President of India to Romania would give new momentum to relations between the two countries.
'Against the backdrop of the agreement between the European Union and India, our bilateral cooperation will develop in the coming years, so that Romania can become a bridgehead for Indian investment in the European Union. I am convinced that the Romania-India Business Forum represents a new stage in developing our cooperation and creates the conditions for doubling bilateral trade exchanges in the period ahead,' Ilie Bolojan said during the plenary meeting of the two delegations.
The meeting's agenda also included coordination efforts in areas such as security and the defence industry, in the current geopolitical context.
Ilie Bolojan and Droupadi Murmu also discussed improving labour mobility, given that around 15,000 Indian citizens currently work in Romania.
In the context of renewed political dialogue and efforts to increase the frequency of government-level interactions, the Romanian Prime Minister extended an invitation to his Indian counterpart, Shri Narendra Modi, to visit Romania, following a long period since the last visit by an Indian prime minister to the country.
'India is a valuable partner for Romania. We have opportunities to intensify political dialogue at the highest level, as well as to strengthen economic and sectoral cooperation and the cultural and people-to-people ties between our countries - pillars around which we have designated 2028 as the Romania-India Year of Innovation, when we will celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations,' Prime Minister Bolojan said.
The Romanian delegation included Mihai Jurca, head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery; Sena Latif, Romania's ambassador to the Republic of India; Dragoss Hotea, Secretary of State at the Prime Minister's Chancellery; Ana Tinca, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; as well as Luminita Odobescu and Raul Gutin, state advisers at the Prime Minister's Chancellery.
India is Romania's third-largest trading partner in the Indo-Pacific region. In recent years, bilateral trade volumes have fluctuated between 1.7 and 1.1 billion US dollars, recording a recovery in 2025, when they reached nearly 1.3 billion US dollars, according to the press release.
