A cultural programme marking the 100th anniversary of Queen Maria of Romania's visit to the United States and Canada will take place on July 18 2026 at Aspen Meadows, Colorado, as part of the Aspen Institute Romania anniversary celebrations, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR).
Initiated and organised by Aspen Institute Romania, the programme will feature the National Cotroceni Museum exhibition '100 Years - Queen Maria of Romania's Visit to America (1926-2026)', a screening of the documentary 'Maria, Heart of Romania', directed by John Florescu, as well as a series of talks and lectures dedicated to Queen Maria's legacy and her contribution to promoting Romania's image internationally. The events will be attended by filmmaker John Florescu and conductor Cristian Macelaru, the ICR Press Office said on Wednesday.
The exhibition '100 Years - Queen Maria of Romania's Visit to America (1926-2026)' commemorates one hundred years since the historic journey, which took place between October 18 and November 24, 1926. It has been organised by the National Cotroceni Museum in partnership with the ICR, at the initiative of Aspen Institute Romania and the Friends of Romania Foundation, with support from the Renasterea Foundation. The exhibition is based on documentary materials from the collections of the National Archives of Romania, the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Daniel Obreja Collection.
The exhibition comprises 20 documentary photo panels illustrating Queen Marie's complete itinerary through the United States and Canada, her official meetings with political leaders and representatives of Romanian communities, as well as the extensive coverage of the visit in the American press.
'Through her speeches and public appearances, Queen Maria made a decisive contribution to strengthening Romania's international prestige, turning the journey into a landmark moment in Romanian cultural diplomacy,' the ICR said.
The documentary 'Maria, Heart of Romania' revisits the international dimension of one of the most important figures in modern Romanian history and highlights her role in strengthening Romania's image in the United States. It focuses on her contribution during the First World War, her diplomatic efforts at the Paris Peace Conference, and her involvement in promoting the interests of Greater Romania.
