Ankara - AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: President Nicusor Dan will underline the need to strengthen air and maritime defence at Wednesday's NATO Summit and will support reinforcing the Alliance's defence and deterrence posture on the Eastern Flank.
The head of state arrived in Ankara on Tuesday evening, where he met Allied leaders at a reception and dinner hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and First Lady Emine Erdogan.
On Wednesday, the President of Türkiye and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will welcome Allied leaders at the opening of the Summit.
During the high-level meeting, President Nicusor Dan will underline the importance of continued Allied support for security in the Black Sea region and of strengthening the deterrence and defence posture across the Eastern Flank in a unified manner, the Presidential Administration said ahead of the meeting. He will also draw attention to the regional consequences of Russia's actions, including their impact on Romania, with particular emphasis on the need to strengthen air and maritime defence.
Romania also signed several Memoranda of Understanding on counter-drone defence programmes on Tuesday at the NATO Security and Defence Industry Forum (NSDIF).
'At NATO level, discussions are under way on a range of measures to identify the best technical solution for air defence against low-altitude targets. A memorandum was also signed on pilot training at several locations across Europe. Another document signed was the NATO Drone Edge project, under which member states agree to carry out joint drone procurement. It will operate as a NATO-tested marketplace featuring NATO-validated solutions from which countries will be able to purchase products coordinated at Alliance level. In addition, another project was signed for NATO Global Eye, a new system that will replace the well-known AWACS aircraft used for high-altitude surveillance,' acting Defence Minister Radu Miruta said after the signing ceremony.
Several defence contracts were announced at the Forum on Tuesday by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
According to Rutte, NATO Allies will invest more than 40 billion US dollars over the next five years in capabilities to defend against drones, AFP reported.
Defence investment will feature prominently in discussions among leaders at the Summit.
The main items on Wednesday's agenda include meeting commitments to increase defence spending and assuming greater responsibilities by European Allies, continuing support for Ukraine and strengthening the Alliance's operational and industrial capacity through the combined effect of expanding industry, production and technological innovation.
