Agerpres special correspondent to Ankara, Oana Ghita, reports: President Nicusor Dan is participating in the NATO Summit in Ankara, which will take place on Wednesday, where he will advocate the importance of Allied support for the Black Sea region and the strengthening of air and maritime defence.
'Alliance leaders are meeting in Ankara against a security backdrop that continues to deteriorate as a result of Russia's war against Ukraine and developments in the Middle East,' the Presidential Administration said on Saturday.
The Allies will therefore underscore the importance of maintaining transatlantic unity and reaffirm their commitment to collective defence as the Alliance's top priority.
The main items on the summit agenda include fulfilling commitments to increase defence spending and assuming greater responsibilities by the European Allies, continuing support for Ukraine, and strengthening the Alliance's operational and industrial capabilities through the development of industry, increased production and technological innovation.
During the summit, the President of Romania will reaffirm the country's status as a reliable ally that makes a significant contribution to Euro-Atlantic security, highlighting Romania's contributions across all areas of interest on the summit agenda.
He will also stress the importance of continued Allied support for security in the Black Sea region and of strengthening the deterrence and defence posture across the Eastern Flank in a coherent manner. Furthermore, the Head of State will draw attention to the regional consequences of Russia's actions, including their impact on Romania, emphasising in this context the need to reinforce air and maritime defence.
On the sidelines of the summit, Nicusor Dan will also hold a series of bilateral meetings. His delegation includes interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu, interim Minister of National Defence Radu Miruta, and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Gheorghita Vlad.
The President is due to arrive in Ankara on Tuesday evening, when he and his partner, Mirabela Gradinaru, will attend the official reception and dinner for heads of state and government and their partners, hosted by the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the First Lady, Emine Erdogan.
The summit programme includes a meeting of the North Atlantic Council at Heads of State and Government level, together with a series of related events involving NATO partners. Several official documents, including the Summit Declaration, are expected to be adopted. On Tuesday, the NATO Security and Defence Industry Forum (NSDIF) is also taking place on the margins of the summit.
This is only the second NATO summit to be hosted by Turkey, following the 2004 summit, at which Romania participated for the first time as an Ally. The event therefore also carries symbolic significance for Romania. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Florin Marin; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
