Romanian firefighters worked on Sunday to protect homes, contain the spread of wildfires and support the French authorities in their assigned operational sectors in the Trevillach - Montalba-le-Chateau area, where vegetation fires are burning.

'The national specialist forest firefighting module, pre-positioned in France through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, is continuing its mission today under the coordination of the French authorities,' the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) said.

According to information from the field, several homes were located near the affected area, with the fire posing a risk of spreading to them.

'Operations were carried out under difficult conditions, with the main challenge being the speed at which the fire spread, driven by strong winds and dry vegetation in the area. The rapid development of the flames, together with the emergence of new fire fronts, required continuous adaptation of the operational deployment,' the press release reads.

The Romanian module is currently awaiting assignment to a new operational sector. Personnel will also be rotated on Monday to ensure continuity of the mission and maintain operational capability. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Alexandru Florea; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
