The Regina Maria Theatre announced on Thursday the official selection for the 10th edition of the Oradea International Theatre Festival (FITO), which will take place from September 10 to 20, 2026, marking 50 years since the city's first theatre festival, Short Theatre Week, was launched.
Funded by the Bihor County Council, the festival will bring together its two established sections: the 28th edition of the Short Theatre Festival and the sixth edition of the Arcadia Children's Theatre Festival, which returns after an eight-year hiatus.
According to a press release issued by the theatre, more than 100 productions from Romania and abroad were submitted following the call for entries launched in May. From these, the selectors chose 21 productions to be staged over the ten-day festival, alongside invited performances and productions by Oradea's theatres.
The FITO 2026 selection was made by Victoria Balint, acting manager of the Regina Maria Theatre, director Bobi Pricop, and theatre journalist and translator Raluca Radulescu.
Of the 21 selected productions, seven are from Bucharest, five were produced in Oradea, three come from Cluj-Napoca, while one production each represents theatres from Sfantu Gheorghe, Targu Mures and Chisinau. The programme also includes two international productions and four performances created by universities and theatre schools.
The selection brings together productions by public and independent theatres, award-winning performances, international works and productions directed by leading contemporary theatre directors, offering a programme that is diverse in both style and subject matter.
At the same time, the Arcadia Children's Theatre Festival will bring seven performances for children and families to Oradea, presented by theatres from several Romanian cities, including two productions recognised at this year's UNITER Awards Gala.
In addition to the performances, organisers are preparing a series of accompanying events aimed at turning FITO into a meeting place for artists, performing arts professionals and audiences.
