Teleki Palace in Cluj-Napoca is set to undergo a major rehabilitation worth over RON 67 million, aiming to restore the historic building and reintegrate it into the city's cultural-tourism circuit, the Cluj County Council announced.
The project will refurbish the palace and bring back to the building the 'Octavian Goga' County Library branch currently relocated due to deterioration. Works include structural consolidation, restoration of façades, carpentry and roof, new foundations on the west wing, drainage improvements, reinforcement of walls and floors, and full replacement of electrical, sanitary, heating and lighting systems.
The investment totals RON 67.47 million, of which the county contributes 36.34%. The rest will be covered by the other co-owners: Cluj-Napoca City Hall (37.01%) and private holders (26.65%).
Cluj County Council president Alin Tise said preserving such historic buildings is essential and expressed hope for a swift rehabilitation so the palace can be returned to the community.
Teleki Palace, built between 1790 and 1795 at the initiative of Count Adam Teleki II and designed by architect Joseph Leder, is a key example of late Baroque with classicist influences. In the 1930s it passed to the Roman-Catholic Church. Under the communist regime it was nationalised and used as a boarding school and family housing. Today it hosts the 'Kogalniceanu' branch of the county library, temporarily relocated due to the building's advanced degradation.
