Social Democrat Senator Robert Cazanciuc declared on Tuesday that he expects the Romanian president to nominate PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu for the position of prime minister, arguing that he represents the only option that can benefit from a parliamentary majority.
'I believe that the President of Romania will ultimately appoint Mr. Grindeanu, because it is the only formula, taking into account the arithmetic in Parliament and the party's willingness to ultimately assume an act of governance,' Cazanciuc said at the Palace of Parliament.
Asked about the scenario of a PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, advanced in the public space after the statements of the UDMR leader, Kelemen Hunor, the social-democratic senator reiterated that the PSD officially proposes Sorin Grindeanu for the position of prime minister and that the decision regarding the appointment belongs to the President of Romania.
In his opinion, a PSD minority government could easily obtain the vote of Parliament if it benefited from the support of the PNL and UDMR.
'In fact, from the calculations made, a PSD minority government with votes from UDMR, from PNL, could pass without any problems. I think this would be, ultimately, the responsible attitude. And UDMR has always proven to be responsible, despite the declarations it sometimes makes, so, more courageous,' Cazanciuc also said.
Asked if PSD would be willing to offer ministerial portfolios to UDMR in such a government, the social-democratic senator stated that there have been no discussions on this topic so far.
Regarding the recent transfers of MPs to the PNL, Robert Cazanciuc stated that such moves are common in Parliament and do not represent an objective for the PSD.
'These movements are somehow part of parliamentary custom, for people to move from one party to another. It's not an end in itself.
