The National Defence Ministry (NApN) informs that it was notified on Monday after a local resident reported the presence of drone fragments via the 112 emergency service near the village of Rachelu, Luncavita commune, Tulcea County.
According to an MApN press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, specialist teams from the Ministry and other institutions in charge of national security and defence arrived at the scene and intervened in accordance with established procedures, assessing the risks and securing the area.
'Following the assessment, the teams confirmed the presence of an explosive payload. The payload was destroyed in a controlled detonation at the scene on Tuesday morning, at a specially designated location, by a team of National Defence Ministry specialists, in full compliance with all procedures applicable to such situations and in complete safety for both the public and the personnel involved in the operation,' the press release reads.
The case has been taken over by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanta Court of Appeal.
Preliminary findings by specialists indicate that the fragments came from a drone used in attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian port infrastructure in April 2026, before the air defence reinforcement and adaptation measures adopted after the serious incidents in Galati, the Ministry said.
According to the press release, since the beginning of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine, more than 100 attacks have been recorded against targets located close to Romania's border.
'In this context, 29 unauthorised incursions by Russian drones into Romania's airspace have been recorded and drones or drone fragments have been identified on Romanian territory in around 50 cases. In 2026 alone, 33 attacks have been recorded near the border and, as a protective measure and to monitor the airspace, aircraft assigned to air policing missions were scrambled on 26 occasions. Also this year, 15 unauthorised drone incursions into Romania's airspace have been recorded and drones or drone fragments have been identified on Romanian territory in 14 cases,' the Defence Ministry points out.
