National Liberal Party (PNL) Vice President and MEP Siegfried Muresan, nominated by the PNL, the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) for prime minister, said on Friday that the aim is to form a competent, coherent government that is 'truly pro-European through its actions, not just its declarations,' adding that appointing the prime minister is the prerogative of Romania's president.
'First of all, I would like to thank my colleagues in the National Liberal Party and our trusted partners in the USR and the UDMR for openly and transparently discussing a solution within the leadership bodies of all three parties and nominating me for the office of Romania's prime minister. I am convinced that the people of Romania want modernisation and reform, and our objective is to present them with an honest proposal, openly supported by the three parties, for a Romania where honest work is rewarded and appreciated, and where the state supports its citizens,' Muresan said after the three parties officially announced his nomination.
He said he is fully aware of Romania's urgent priorities, noting that these are the very issues he has worked on throughout his mandate in the European Parliament.
'I was one of the European Parliament's three chief negotiators for the Recovery and Resilience Facility, which finances the national recovery plans of all member states. I know exactly what Romania must do to successfully complete its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and I am confident that, together with my colleagues in the PNL, the USR and the UDMR - the three parties currently governing Romania responsibly - we can successfully complete the PNRR and address the country's other pressing priorities. From my very first day in the European Parliament, I have worked on precisely these issues: the budget and the economy. Had Romania's priorities been different, perhaps someone else would have been better suited for this role. I accepted this nomination knowing these are the areas in which I have experience and where I can contribute,' he said.
Muresan added that he now awaits the president's decision.
'We have fulfilled our responsibility. The appointment now rests with Romania's president, and we await the next steps. Our goal is for Romania to have a competent government. Not just any government would be good enough. We want a government that is genuinely pro-European through its actions, not merely its declarations, a coherent government that meets people's expectations,' he said.
