Defence Minister Radu Miruta said on Friday, marking Romania's National Flag Day, that Romanians should take pride in the national tricolour and strive every day to be worthy of it.
'Take a minute. Set aside the rush, the disputes, our differences of opinion and everything that, in recent months, has seemed to divide us. Instead, think about what unites us. We may disagree on many things, but I believe there is one symbol every Romanian respects: the tricolour. Romanian service members wear it every day on their left sleeve, not as a simple insignia but as a pledge - a symbol of duty, honour and responsibility towards Romania. Perhaps we should learn from them not to be afraid to be proud of our country, not through grand words but through what we do every day,' Miruta wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that Romania's flag had witnessed both the nation's greatest trials and its finest achievements.
'Under its colours, generations defended freedom, built this country and left something better to those who came after them. Today it is our turn. National Flag Day is not only about a symbol. It is about who we are, the values we believe in and the Romania we choose to leave to our children. I respect Romania's flag and, as I pledged when I took office, I devote all my knowledge and energy every day to serving the Romanian people and defending Romania's democracy, freedom, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Let us be proud of our tricolour, but above all, let us do something every day that makes us worthy of it,' the defence minister said.
