The acting head of the Romanian Consulate General in Saint Petersburg has been declared persona non grata, and the Russian side has decided to withdraw its consent for the establishment of the respective consular post, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.
The ministry stated that the decision was communicated to Romania's ambassador to the Russian Federation, who was summoned on Thursday afternoon to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the Romanian ambassador to the Russian Federation was summoned on the afternoon of June 25, 2026 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. During the meeting, the Russian side notified the declaration as persona non grata of the acting head of the Romanian Consulate General in Saint Petersburg, as well as the Russian side's decision to withdraw its consent for the establishment of the respective consular post,' the MFA said in a statement.
According to the MFA, the Russian reaction was predictable.
'As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated from the very beginning, the reaction of the Russian side was predictable. The MFA recalls that the decision announced today by the Russian side comes in response to the measures adopted by the Romanian authorities on May 29, 2026, following the crash of a Russian drone in the city of Galati, an incident that resulted in injuries and material damage. At that time, the Romanian side decided to declare the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Constanta persona non grata and ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate General in that city,' the statement added.
