A working replica of the Gutenberg printing press, recently acquired from Slovenia by the Transylvanian Princes' Palace Cultural Centre, will be displayed for the first time at the 17th edition of the 'Alba Transilvana' c'Arte Fair (the title plays on the Romanian words for 'book' (carte) and 'art', Editor's note), to be held in Alba Iulia from Friday to Sunday.
'The Transylvanian Princes' Palace Cultural Centre announces the first participation of the Transylvanian Princes' Palace Publishing House in the 17th edition of the 'Alba Transilvana' c'Arte Fair, taking place on 19-21 June 2026 on Museum Street in Alba Iulia. In addition to its own publications, the publishing house's stand will host an absolute premiere: a working replica of the Gutenberg printing press, recently acquired from Slovenia,' according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.
According to the release, the mechanism was crafted entirely by hand, using period techniques.
'For added authenticity, the craftsman used timber recovered during the restoration of a church more than 150 years old in the region,' the statement said.
Visitors to the stand will not only be able to admire the complex mechanism but also operate it themselves. Using handmade paper, they will be able to print an image of the Princes' Palace in Alba Iulia.
A goldsmith in Mainz, Johannes Gensfleisch, known as Gutenberg, invented movable-type printing and began mass-printing the 42-line Bible in February 1455.
Several renowned printing presses and workshops operated in Alba Iulia during the Principality of Transylvania, namely in 1567-1569, 1577-1580, 1623-1658, 1639-1642, 1683-1689 and 1699-1702, the press release added. AGERPRES (RO - writing by:: Marinela Brumar; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
