The 2026 Ia Day will be celebrated in Lisbon on Saturday, June 20, through music, dance and Romanian folk traditions, the Embassy of Romania in Portugal announced on Thursday.
Lisbon will once again dress in festive traditional Romanian attire for a special open-air show dedicated to the 'ia', Romania's traditional blouse. The event, organized by the Embassies of Romania and the Republic of Moldova in Portugal in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Lisbon, will take place on June 20 starting at 17:00 local time, at the Almeida Garrett Amphitheatre in the Park of Poets, Oeiras.
Special guests from Romania, young artists from the local Romanian community, performers of Moldovan origin living in Portugal, parents and children - Romanians, Portuguese and friends from everywhere - will gather to rediscover the story of the Romanian traditional costume and joyfully celebrate the 'ia', a symbol of folk spirit and ancient heritage.
The ensemble of the 'Transilvania' University of Brasov and the 'Rapsodia Valceana' Folk Music Band, the headline guests of this year's edition, will bring a touch of home to the Lusitan stage. They will be joined by Portuguese artists, young folk singer Diana Racar, and members of the 'Plai de Dor' Association.
Renowned ethnographer Iulia Gorneanu will present the symbolism of the traditional costume and the meaning of Ia Day as part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, linking it to the feast of Sanziene (the traditional name for gentle fairies in Romanian folklore) and other summer-solstice traditions.
Visitors will also find traditional foods, handicrafts, embroidered blouses and artisanal objects at stands run by Romanian and Moldovan entrepreneurs based in Portugal.
Participants dressed in 'ia' or traditional costume will be able to join the 2026 #PortIeRomâneasca Photo Album, with their photos later published on the Facebook page of the Romanian Embassy in Portugal.
The event is organised with the support of the Valcea County Council and 'Transilvania' University of Brasov, in partnership with the Oeiras Municipality, and with the active involvement of Romanian and Moldovan entrepreneurs in Portugal, as well as the consistent support of Alain Bonte, Honorary Consul of Romania in Estoril.
