A medical first for Romania's public health system was recorded on Wednesday at the 'Prof. Dr. Dimitrie Gerota' Emergency Clinical Hospital, where doctors performed pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) - a modern, minimally invasive technique used to treat patients with advanced oncological disease involving the peritoneum.
The procedures were carried out by a multidisciplinary team coordinated by Prof. Adrian Bartos, senior general surgeon, and Dr. Rares Munteanu, senior general surgeon, together with the anaesthesia and intensive-care team led by Dr. Alida Moise, senior anaesthesiologist and director of the hospital, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
This innovative therapy was performed on two female patients, aged 50 and 73. The interventions were completed successfully and under maximum safety conditions, the Ministry said.
PIPAC involves administering chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity, in aerosol form and under controlled pressure, through a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. The method ensures the efficient distribution of the active substance to tumour lesions and opens new therapeutic perspectives for patients with peritoneal malignancies.
The successful completion of these procedures, the statement adds, confirms the high level of professional training of the medical staff at the 'Prof. Dr. Dimitrie Gerota' Emergency Clinical Hospital and the institution's capacity to implement advanced medical techniques used in leading European centres.
The achievement is part of the hospital's broader development program - a strategic investment objective of the Interior Ministry - which includes building a new hospital facility, modernising medical infrastructure and expanding diagnostic and treatment capacity through sustained investment in technology and personnel.
