Romania and the Republic of Moldova commemorate poet Mihai Eminescu in Vienna

Romania and the Republic of Moldova paid tribute to the national poet Mihai Eminescu in Vienna on the 137th anniversary of his passing.

Representatives of the two countries laid wreaths on Monday, June 15, at the bust of Eminescu located in front of the Romanian Orthodox Parish in the Austrian capital.

The commemorative ceremony was attended by diplomats and staff from the two diplomatic missions, led by Romania's Charge d'Affaires ad interim in Austria, Andrea Amza-Andras, PhD, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Austria, Victoria Rosa. The event was also joined by Stefan-Claudiu Marin, Deputy Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in Vienna.

According to the Romanian Embassy in Austria, the joint gesture by the two diplomatic representations highlighted the shared language, culture and values that unite Romanians on both sides of the River Prut, as well as their respect for the spiritual and cultural legacy left by Mihai Eminescu.

The ceremony took place at a particularly significant moment for the Republic of Moldova. On the same day, in Luxembourg, negotiations under Cluster 1 - 'Fundamentals' were opened as part of the Republic of Moldova's accession process to the European Union. Representatives of Romanian diplomacy emphasised that this historic step confirms the Republic of Moldova's European vocation and the place of the Romanian cultural and linguistic sphere within the European community of values.

The organisers stated that the tribute to Mihai Eminescu in Vienna was both an expression of gratitude for the work and legacy of the national poet and a reflection of the cultural and spiritual ties between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
