RetuRO, the administrator of the Deposit Return System (DRS), announced that the threshold of 10 billion DRS containers collected since the launch of the system has now been reached.

'To better understand the scale of this quantity, the collected containers can be compared with easily understandable benchmarks. Placed end to end, they could circle the Earth 50 times or cover the distance between the Earth and the Moon five times. In terms of volume, they could fill the Palace of Parliament three times, while placed side by side they would cover the entire surface area of the city of Iasi, half of Bucharest or form a district consisting of 700 four-storey apartment blocks,' a RetuRO press release reads.

During the two and a half years since its launch, RetuRO has delivered more than 700,000 tonnes of high-quality materials - PET, aluminium and glass - to recyclers, directly supplying Romania's recycling industry. By comparison, this quantity is equivalent to the mass of 15 ships the size of the Titanic or a convoy of 30,000 lorries travelling on the Bucharest - Cluj-Napoca route.

With a collection rate of 85% in 2026, the Deposit Return System continues to support Romania's transition towards a circular economy by encouraging millions of Romanians to adopt environmentally responsible behaviour, the press release also mentions.

RetuRO Sistem Garantie Returnare S.A. (www.returosgr.ro) is a company operating on a not-for-profit basis, meaning that any profit generated through the collection of beverage containers will be reinvested exclusively in the development of the Deposit Return System. The company was created by a consortium of three private shareholders: Asociatia Berarii României pentru Mediu (the Brewers of Romania for the Environment Association) (30%), the Asociatia Producătorilor de Bauturi Racoritoare pentru Sustenabilitate (Soft Drinks Producers Association for Sustainability) (30%) and Asociatia Retailerilor pentru Mediu (the Retailers for the Environment Association) (20%), together with one public shareholder, the Romanian state, through the central environmental authority, the Ministry of the Environment, Waters and Forests (20%).

RetuRO, the administrator of the Deposit Return System, operates with exclusively private funding and is responsible for ensuring transparency regarding the quantities of beverage containers placed on the market and returned by consumers.
