Romanian students came first in the nations' ranking at the 2026 Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (JBOI), winning three gold medals and one bronze, the Ministry of Education and Research reports.

The medal winners were Andrei Nemtisor, Year 8, Costache Negruzzi National College, Iasi, absolute gold medal, with the highest score in the competition; Traian Danciu, Year 7, International Computer Science High School, Bucharest, gold medal; Vlad Bondoc, Year 8, International Computer Science High School, Bucharest, gold medal; and Vlad Ioan Muntoiu, Year 8, Constantin Diaconovici Loga National Computer Science College, Timisoara, bronze medal.

The team leaders were teacher Eugen Nodea of the Gorj County Centre of Excellence, Targu Jiu, as team leader, and Ioan-Cristian Pop, a student at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, as deputy leader.

The Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (JBOI) took place from 22 to 28 September in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing together 55 competitors from 13 countries.

Following these results, Romania ranked first among the participating nations both in terms of total score and according to the number and value of the medals won.

Within the Ministry of Education and Research, the Olympiad was coordinated by the Directorate for Olympiads, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education.

The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of Romania's national teams in international Olympiads by covering participation fees and travel costs, daily allowances for the days of stay, as well as supporting the organisation and running of the stages preceding the international Olympiads - the local, county, municipal and national stages of these competitions.
