The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry (MMAP) has signed the financing contract for a RON 49-million project aimed at strengthening the national system for managing and monitoring Romania-based bird species. Of the total value, RON 41.7 million come from EU co-financing.

Running from 2025 to 2029 under the Sustainable Development Programme, the project's goal is to improve Romania's monitoring and reporting of bird species of community interest, ensuring complete and up-to-date data on their conservation status, MMAP said on Facebook.

Planned actions include field monitoring, national data collection and analysis, drafting Romania's conservation-status report, developing conservation measures for at-risk species, and public information and awareness activities.

The Ministry notes that, as Romania is home to some of Europe's most important wild-bird populations, 'protecting them is essential for maintaining ecosystem balance and safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.' MMAP also points out that strengthening this system helps Romania meet EU obligations on bird and habitat protection and also supports long-term biodiversity conservation.
