The Code Orange heatwave warning, in force on Friday across more than half of the country, will be scaled back on Saturday and will cover the counties of Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Botosani and Iasi.
According to the new warnings issued by the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), between 10:00 on 22 August and 10:00 on 23 August, the six counties will be under Code Orange for particularly high maximum temperatures, scorching heat conditions and high thermal discomfort, with the temperature-humidity index (THI) exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units.
Maximum temperatures will range from 35 to 37 Celsius degrees, while 38 degrees will be reached in the southern parts of Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt and Teleorman counties. Tropical nights, with minimum temperatures of 18-22 degrees, will occur in some areas.
The rest of the country, except for Constanta and Tulcea counties, will be under a Code Yellow warning on Saturday, with particularly high maximum temperatures of 33-37 degrees.
Heatwave conditions and high thermal discomfort are expected in some areas, while the temperature-humidity index (THI) will reach or slightly exceed the critical threshold of 80 units in the Romanian Plain. Tropical nights, with minimum temperatures of 19-22 degrees, are expected in the southern half of the country.
For Friday, meteorologists have maintained the Code Orange warning for 27 counties in Banat, Crisana, Maramures, Transylvania, Oltenia, the northern half of Moldavia and south-western Muntenia, where particularly high maximum temperatures, heatwave conditions and high thermal discomfort are expected, with the temperature-humidity index (THI) exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units.
Maximum temperatures will range from 35 to 38 degrees, while temperatures of 39-40 degrees will be reached in isolated areas of southern and south-western Oltenia. Tropical nights, with minimum temperatures of 18-22 degrees, are expected in some areas.
At the same time, a Code Yellow warning is in force in the southern half of Moldavia and in northern, central and eastern Muntenia. Maximum temperatures will be particularly high, generally ranging from 34 to 37 degrees Celsius, while the temperature-humidity index (THI) will reach and slightly exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
