Romanian students won one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), placing Romania second worldwide in the all-time medal standings, the Ministry of Education announced on Sunday.

The winning students are: Rares-Andrei Neculau, 12th grade, Vasile Alecsandri National College in Galati, gold medal; Mihai-Valeriu Voicu, 12th grade, International Computer Science High School in Bucharest, silver medal; Andrei-Paul Iorgulescu, 11th grade, Tudor Vianu National Computer Science College in Bucharest, bronze medal; and Alexandru Dima, 12th grade, International Computer Science High School in Bucharest, bronze medal. The high scores achieved by Rares-Andrei Neculau and Mihai-Valeriu Voicu represent Romania's third-best historical performance in the competition's individual rankings, the Ministry of Education said in a Facebook post.

According to the ministry, these results allow Romania to retain its top positions in the official long-term rankings maintained by International Olympiad in Informatics Statistics: second worldwide in the all-time ranking by the total number of medals won throughout its participation in the competition and seventh in the medal-value ranking, based on the share of gold, silver and bronze medals.

The Ministry of Education and Research underscored that close cooperation with the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics (SEPI) plays an essential role in maintaining this continuity.

The Romanian team was accompanied in Uzbekistan by Professor Adrian Panaete, as Team Leader (A.T. Laurian National College in Botosani), and Luca Perju-Verzotti, as Deputy Leader (SEPI representative, student at Ecole polytechnique).

Within the Ministry of Education and Research, the Olympiad was coordinated by the Directorate for Olympiads, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education.

'Beyond the students' achievements, this edition also brought professional recognition for the Romanian technical staff. Professor Adrian Panaete was personally presented with the Long Service Award, given by the international community in recognition of his involvement in and management of the team over seven editions of the International Olympiad in Informatics. His Excellency Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, Romania's ambassador to Tashkent, was alongside the national team at the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Uzbekistan. Congratulations to the entire team for their seriousness, consistency and determination, and to the teachers and parents for their support!,' the post reads.

The Ministry of Education and Research brings to mind that it supports the participation of Romania's national teams in international Olympiads by covering participation fees and travel costs, daily allowances for the days spent at the events, as well as the organisation and running of the stages preceding the international Olympiads - local, county, municipal and national stages of these competitions.
