David Popovici storms to gold in European Championships 100m freestyle, sets new competition record

Romania's David Popovici, Olympic, world and European champion, stormed to gold in the men's 100m freestyle on Wednesday night at the European Swimming Championships in Paris, clocking a competition-record 46.56.

Popovici, second at the turn, powered through the final 50 metres to beat Russia's Egor Kornev (46.74) and Hungary's Kristof Milak (46.87).

The Romanian star lowered his own championship record of 46.72, set in Tuesday's semifinals, and secured his third straight European title in the 100m freestyle after wins in 2022 and 2024.

Popovici is also set to race the 200m freestyle, with heats scheduled for Thursday at 10:59 (Romania time). AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Mihai Tenea; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
