The second rotation of the Romanian specialised forest firefighting module (Ground Forest Fire Fighting using Vehicles - GFFF-V), deployed to the French Republic between 16 and 31 July, returned to Romania on Monday evening.
'During the two-week mission, the Romanian firefighters were integrated into the operational deployment coordinated by the French authorities and carried out the tasks assigned by the field operational commands, successively intervening in areas affected by forest fires in Ponteves, Brignoles and Correns, depending on the development of the operational situation,' the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) Press Office informed.
In the Ponteves area, the Romanian firefighters carried out missions to limit the spread of the fire, extinguish and eliminate active fire spots and monitor intervention sectors, helping to reduce the risk of reignition.
Subsequently, the module was redeployed to the Brignoles area, where it carried out missions to protect the homes located near the fire front. After the fire was contained, the crews continued patrol, identification and elimination activities targeting hidden fire spots, in order to keep the fire within the perimeter established by the French authorities.
'In the final days of the mission, the Romanian module was deployed to the Correns area, where a large-scale forest fire led to the mobilisation of a complex intervention deployment made up of ground and air resources. The Romanian firefighters operated with all available personnel and intervention equipment, being deployed across two intervention sectors. The missions carried out focused on limiting the spread of the fire, protecting homes at risk, as well as identifying and extinguishing active and hidden fire spots, supporting the efforts of the French authorities to stabilise the operational situation,' the quoted source said.
Throughout the entire mission, the Romanian firefighters cooperated with French emergency services and other European modules, proving professionalism, adaptability and a high level of interoperability in managing large-scale forest fires.
The experience gained during this mission contributes to strengthening the operational capacity of the IGSU and developing international cooperation in the area of civil protection, by capitalizing on best practices and lessons learned alongside European partners.
At the end of the mission, the Romanian firefighters received numerous messages of appreciation from local communities.
Romania's mission in the French Republic continues through the activity of the third rotation of the RO GFFF-V module, which continues to carry out operational missions in support of the French authorities. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Alexandru Florea; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
