Defence Minister Radu Miruta on Wednesday July 29, Romania's National Anthem Day, sent a message saying that the anthem 'Wake up, Romanian! doesn't just talk about our past, but also about the debt we owe to the future.'

'We are living in times when debate is often replaced by conflict, and background noise drowns out facts and arguments. However, beyond our opinions about politics, economics, administration or sports, there remain landmarks that define us all as a nation: the tricolour flag, the anthem and the love for Romania. Today, on the National Anthem Day, I confess that every time I hear 'Wake up, Romanian!' I feel the same emotion and responsibility. Because the anthem does not only talk about our past, but also about the debt we have to the future. Each generation is called to do its part so that Romania is stronger, fairer and more respected. And freedom, dignity and unity are not values that we inherit definitively; they must be defended and strengthened every day, by the deeds of each one of us. Today we are not just celebrating a symbol of the Romanian state. We celebrate the conviction that, when we put the good of Romania above any difference between us, we are stronger together. Happy National Anthem Day to all Romanians!', Miruta wrote in a social media post.

The Day of the National Anthem of Romania - 'Wake up, Romanian!', symbol of the unity of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 - is celebrated annually on July 29, the date on which, in 1848, it was officially sung for the first time, in the Zavoi Park in Ramnicu Valcea.

The lyrics of the national anthem were written by Andrei Muresanu, and the tune was composed by Anton Pann.
