Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Varlaam Ploiesteanul met Albania's Ambassador to Romania, Enkeleda Merkuri, on Tuesday to discuss opportunities for expanding academic and spiritual cooperation between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Albanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian Patriarchate's Basilica News Agency reported.

'Taking into account the importance of the Romanian people and the Romanian Orthodox Church in Albania's attainment of independence and in the organisation of the new Albanian state and its Church, they wish to strengthen these ties, particularly in the academic field,' Bishop Varlaam said after the meeting, which took place at the Patriarchal Palace.

The patriarchal auxiliary bishop recalled Romania's significant contribution to the development of the Albanian Orthodox Church and the Albanian state, stressing that this shared heritage could provide the basis for new joint projects.
